The secret ingredient

This approach is based on creating a feeling of exclusivity or belonging to an elite group. Manipulators subtly suggest that those who subscribe to their ideas or use their products are part of a select group of privileged individuals who possess a certain knowledge, skill, or status. This illusion of accessing something special can push us to adopt behaviors or beliefs simply to maintain our place within this closed circle.

How to resist manipulation?

Now that you know some common tactics used by manipulators, how can you deal with their sneaky advances? Here are some tips to help you maintain your lucidity and make informed decisions without being influenced by others:

  • Learn to say no. Often, manipulators seek to take advantage of our desire to please others or avoid conflict. Learning to politely but firmly refuse can help you put an end to these attempts at influence.
