In 1973, Mido was one of the first watch brands to dare with the TV case with its Multi-Star. Sixty years later, the Swiss brand reinterpreted it with its very cool Multifort TV Big Date, which we introduced to you here. And since this model was hugely successful, Mido is now offering it in a limited edition that reinforces its “television” origins: the S01E01. A new episode for a series that continues to surprise us!
A dial that thinks it’s an old screen
If you like neo-vintage style watches, you will not be able to remain indifferent to the Multifort TV Big Date. This new limited edition obviously takes up the design of the original model, launched in 2023.
Thus, the watch’s 40×39.2 mm box is inspired by the square shapes of old televisions. The materials used testify to Mido’s expertise in mastering shapes and finishes, reflected in this polished and satin stainless steel, which gives the watch a simultaneously robust and refined look, while the anti-reflective sapphire glass ensures optimal dial readability.
And this is precisely where this S01E01 stands out: the dial becomes a screen, with its play of colors and 3D geometric shapes reminiscent (to the older generation) of the test card of the old televisions. This representation perfectly reflects Mido’s intent to play on the visual codes of a time while reinterpreting them through the prism of contemporary watchmaking technology.
Finally, this spectacular dial would be nothing without its trapezoidal indexes at quarters, its points every five minutes and, of course, the iconic big date positioned at 12 o’clock.
Aesthetics, technical: the new Multifort TV has it all
There is no cathode tube to animate this watch, but an automatic movement whose reliability is no longer to be proved: the latest generation Calibre 80, equipped with a Nivachron spiral and benefiting from an 80-hour power reserve. This mechanism is visible through the transparent back of the case, featuring an oscillating weight adorned with Geneva stripes and engraved with the Mido logo.
For the show to be complete, this S01E01 can also count on a pretty stainless steel bracelet. But for once, we almost come to prefer the two additional models delivered in the custom-made box, two yellow and turquoise rubber bracelets, with raised patterns. If we’re going to play the retro TV card, we might as well go all out!
The nostalgics and those who are not afraid to show their true colors will have to fork out 1550 euros to join the cast of this new Mido series. Without wanting to spoil anyone, it can be said that only 999 copies of this Multifort TV Big Date S01E01 will be produced. Waiting for the release of a next episode?
