The city of Rio de Janeiro is synonymous with sunny beaches, wild samba, and a world-famous carnival. But there is so much more to see and do in this vibrant and welcoming city. Here is our top 5 experiences you won’t want to miss on your trip.

1. The Selaron staircase: an amazing piece of art

You must know it… If we say Snoop Dogg and Pharrell Williams, does it ring a bell? Do you start to hear the tune of the song Beautiful? Well, you’re right there!

Located in the bohemian district of Lapa, the Selarón staircase is a true artistic marvel. Made up of thousands of pieces of tiles in all colors, this staircase is a masterpiece born from the passion of Chilean painter Jorge Selarón. Don’t miss the opportunity to take memorable photos and explore the surrounding area full of lively bars and restaurants.

2. The legendary Corcovado and its panoramic view

The iconic statue of Christ the Redeemer perched on top of Corcovado mountain is one of the seven new wonders of the world. From its feet, enjoy a stunning view over the entire bay of Rio, including the famous beaches of Copacabana and Ipanema as well as the Sugarloaf mountain. You can reach the summit of Corcovado by train (choose right side seats for the maximum spectacle) or by hiking through the Tijuca forest, an excursion that is really worth the detour (be careful, it climbs to over 700 meters in altitude).

Tijuca Forest National Park

One of the largest urban green lungs in the world, the Tijuca Forest spans nearly 40 km² and houses an extremely diverse fauna and flora. In addition to visiting Corcovado, you can also enjoy other exciting activities such as rock climbing, mountain biking, zip-lining, or simply walking and admiring beautiful waterfalls.

3. Copacabana, Ipanema and the beach culture

Rio is famous for its paradisiacal beaches, notably the mythical Copacabana and Ipanema. With their fine sand, turquoise waters, and festive atmosphere, these beaches are a must-visit place for spending a day relaxing, practicing water sports, or simply sipping a caipirinha under the palm trees.

Surf, beach volleyball and other water sports

Rio de Janeiro is synonymous with sport and outdoor life. So you are spoiled for choice when it comes to participating in all kinds of sporting activities. Among the most popular are surfing on the spots of Prainha and Grumari, the beach-volleyball endemic to Brazilian beaches, and the kite-surfing and sailing which find their ideal playground in Guanabara Bay.

4. The historic and colorful neighborhood of Santa Teresa

Perched on the morro Santa Teresa, this picturesque neighborhood stands out for its steep stone-paved streets, its houses with shimmering colors and its bohemian atmosphere. You will love strolling through the winding alleyways, visiting art galleries or stopping in one of the many bars and restaurants to taste a delicious local cuisine.

The Botanical Garden: a haven of peace

Not far from Santa Teresa, do not miss the Rio Botanical Garden: inaugurated in 1808 and listed as a Brazilian national cultural heritage, this green space stretches over more than 54 hectares and houses an incredible collection of tropical plants as well as a multitude of exotic birds. This place is perfect for a relaxing getaway far from the city’s hustle and bustle.

5. The favelas and the vibrant local culture

Rio de Janeiro has nearly 900 favelas, these informal neighborhoods marked by precariousness, but also by a strong cultural identity and an intense community life. Several tourist circuits offer guided tours of the favelas to discover this little-known aspect of the Carioca reality and live an authentic and enriching experience. Be careful not to be too intrusive during favela visits. Remember that for these Brazilians, this is their everyday life.

Samba: the music of the Brazilian soul

It is impossible to talk about Rio without mentioning samba, this bewitching rhythm that permeates all of Brazilian culture. The wild nights in Lapa, a lively neighbourhood located at the foot of the Selarón staircase, will provide you with a unique opportunity to discover the multiple facets of this music and its dances: pagoda, forró or even carioca funk.

Tip: Consider visiting the city during the Rio carnival, a must-see global event where the samba is celebrated with spectacular parades in the Sambodrome Marquês de Sapucaí.

No matter what your interests are, Rio de Janeiro has so much to offer and will seduce you with its contagious energy and incomparable diversity. So don’t hesitate any longer and dive into the adventure !
