The History of the Ben Sherman Brand
After several years spent in the United States, in the textile industry, Arthur Benjamin Sugarman returns to his native England, in Brighton. It is there that he launches the brand that carries (almost) his name in 1963, Ben Sherman.
At a time when Mod culture is gaining momentum, young British proletarians are seduced by these clothes: Ben Sherman shirts become a way to rise above their social status while asserting their look. They are seen everywhere at concerts of The Who, The Jam and other popular British rock bands. Although musical styles evolve, the brand remains linked to these countercultural movements, sometimes very controversial or even extremist (punks, skinheads…) until the early 2000s.
If success continues, Ben Sherman wants to reach a broader audience than just Blur and Oasis fans. In 2004, the brand became the supplier for the British delegation at the Athens Olympic Games. The fusion between casual and sporty style allows it to finally become more mainstream, especially since its collections are not limited to shirts and polos.

A figure of the counterculture, a pioneer of the t-shirt in Great Britain, the brand Ben Sherman is inevitably reminiscent of its rival Fred Perry. With a mix of preppy and casual style, its clothing appeals to anyone who wants to add a “so British” touch to their outfit.
The shirts, t-shirts and polos are prominently featured, as mentioned, and offer a fair quality-price ratio, for a brand that can be classified as mid-range.
The best clothes from Ben Sherman
Solid, polka dot, plaid or patterned, formal or more relaxed, buttoned up or worn open over a t-shirt, the shirt is infinitely varied at Ben Sherman. It is truly THE iconic piece of the English brand, notably the button-down version or American collar, buttoned at the tip.
The other essential piece at Ben Sherman is obviously the polo shirt (as with Fred Perry, we come back to it). It stands out with its often more elaborate and chic style, with a slim fit, beautiful knit and embroidered logo on the sleeve.
Finally, in its desire to reach a wider audience in recent years, the brand has also managed to offer quality underwear, as well as not uninteresting sneakers!
