Spring is a time of renewal and you can take advantage of it to eliminate procrastination from your life. With the days getting longer and temperatures warming up, it’s time to boost yourself to be more effective at work or in your personal projects. Here are some tips to fight this scourge.

First step: identify the causes of procrastination

Before being able to combat procrastination, it is essential to understand its origins. Among the main reasons for constantly postponing tasks to be done, we can notably mention:

Some people are naturally more prone to procrastination than others. Identifying the specific reasons for this tendency in oneself is crucial to implementing appropriate solutions.

Setting clear goals and creating a schedule

S.M.A.R.T Goals

One of the most effective ways to regain motivation is to set specific goals. Use the S.M.A.R.T method – Specific, Measurable, Achievable, Realistic and Time-bound, to define your goals in each of your areas of activity (work, hobbies, personal life).

For example: instead of wanting to “write a novel”, set a goal to write “5 pages per week for 6 months”. This will help you to concretely visualize your progress and to better organize your schedule.

A Well-Structured Schedule

Once your objectives are set, establish a realistic schedule for each task to be accomplished. Plan deadlines to avoid getting into a vicious cycle of constant postponement. Make lists in order of priority and try to stick to this schedule as much as possible. Of course, also allow yourself breaks and moments to relax, as well as a certain right to make mistakes. In this way, you will not fall into counterproductive anxiety that could promote procrastination.

Developing tricks to counter procrastination

Now that you understand why you procrastinate and have an action plan in hand, it’s time to move on to implementation. Some habits can be adopted to facilitate work and avoid falling into procrastination.

Start with the less enjoyable tasks

To avoid constantly postponing that unpleasant phone call or that boring report to write, start your work day with these tasks. Once these are accomplished, you will be even more eager to continue the rest of your activities.

Divide large projects into several sub-tasks

If a task seems too colossal to be accomplished all at once, break it up into several intermediate objectives. This way, you will be able to better focus on each milestone to be achieved and will provide a regular feeling of satisfaction.

Eliminate office distractions

To effectively combat procrastination, it may be necessary to rethink the layout of your workspace. Try as much as possible to eliminate all sources of distraction such as incessant notifications on smartphones or unnecessary objects that draw your attention. Also consider airing out regularly and working in a tidy environment.

Stay motivated throughout the spring

Find External Sources of Motivation

Spring often represents a surge of energy and an explosion of life outside: take advantage of it! Go out and get some fresh air, do some sports or participate in local events. Each of these activities will provide you new inspirations to keep your motivation in the long term.

Reward Yourself Regularly

When you achieve a goal, do not hesitate to reward yourself. It can be a simple moment of relaxation in front of a movie or a night out with friends to celebrate your successes. Creating positive and rewarding links around the accomplishment of your tasks will help maintain your motivation throughout the spring.

Measure and adjust one’s progression

Finally, take the time to follow the progress of your projects and to observe your progress. Do not hesitate to share your achievements with your loved ones to benefit from their support and encouragement. Also consider adjusting your schedule and your goals according to your pace so as not to be overwhelmed by events.

Spring is the ideal time to re-motivate oneself and start afresh. By implementing concrete strategies and working on these habits, it is possible to significantly reduce the risks of falling into the trap of procrastination. So, why not take advantage of this beautiful season to make a fresh start?
