There it is, the cold is starting to fade and the beautiful days are finally showing their faces, the perfect time to get back to work in our beloved garden. So, it’s time to organize in order to have a pleasant exterior to contemplate during the entire beautiful season that is coming. In this article, we present the steps to follow to best prepare your garden for spring.

Clean your garden

First of all, it is essential to thoroughly clean your green space, for that:

  • Remove all the dead leaves and other plant debris that litter the ground and can hinder the growth of your plants.
  • Prune the shrubs and plants that remain after winter, as well as any broken or damaged branches.
  • Remember to pull out the weeds before they proliferate with the arrival of the good weather.

Trim the hedges

To ensure good growth of your hedges, carry out light trimming to give your garden a neat appearance. Also, don’t forget to check the condition of the fences, and repair them if necessary.

The time to get your hands back in the soil

Now that your garden is rid of the impurities accumulated during the winter, it’s time to prepare the ground for new plantings:

  • Hoe and aerate the soil deeply, this will promote the rooting of future plants and improve water circulation.
  • Spread compost or organic amendment on the surface, in order to feed the soil with essential nutrients necessary for the good growth of future plants.
  • Don’t forget to mulch the flowerbeds to maintain the moisture in the soil and limit the growth of weeds.

Gradually reintroduce overwintered plants

For those that were inside or protected, gradually reacclimate them to the outdoors. While they adapt to changing outdoor temperatures, remember to water them regularly.

Plan your crops and arrangements

This is also the time to think about what you wish to grow and plant for the upcoming months, as well as potential arrangements for your garden:

  1. Take inventory of your gardening tools and equipment, and repair or replace them if needed.
  2. Make a list of fruits, vegetables and flowers you wish to see in your garden, as well as the ideal location for each of them.
  3. Calculate the growing time and sowing or planting periods for each chosen species.
  4. Finally, remember to note your choices on a calendar so you don’t forget what you’ve planned!

New plantings: let your creativity run wild

Be bold! Try out new seed varieties or graft fruit trees, you might be pleasantly surprised by the result. Moreover, this will bring a fresh touch of originality and dynamism to your green space.

Water and protect your plantations

Water is essential to ensure the survival of your plants:

  • Make sure to water your young shoots and seedlings regularly and sufficiently at their base.
  • If you have an automatic irrigation system, check that it is working properly and adjust it accordingly.
  • Also consider mulching your flower beds and pots to retain the soil’s moisture and save water.

Focus on prevention against diseases and pests

Opt for ecological preventive treatments, such as plant-based fertilizers, and quickly identify potential problems or the appearance of harmful insects. Also remember to promote the presence of garden helpers (birds, hedgehogs, ladybugs), who will naturally regulate parasite populations.

By following these tips, you will give yourself the best chance of having a resplendent garden in the spring and throughout the beautiful season. So don’t hesitate, put on your gloves and get started!
