How I saved a fortune thanks to spring gardening

With the arrival of good weather, I embarked on a gardening project that allowed me to save a considerable amount, while enjoying my free time. In this article, I share my experience and tips for doing the same!

Why start gardening?

First of all, it is essential to understand the benefits of gardening on our wallet and our well-being. In a world where everything is at your fingertips and ready to consume, the mere act of growing your own fruits and vegetables can be seen as an environmentally responsible and economical approach.

Grow your own food to spend less

Indeed, producing your own food can significantly reduce your food expenses. For example, according to a study published by the National Institute of Agronomic Research (INRA), growing your own tomatoes could be up to 60% cheaper than buying them in a store.

Healthy and environmentally friendly products

Furthermore, gardening offers the advantage of better controlling the quality of the consumed products. By growing one’s fruits and vegetables, one can choose to avoid harmful pesticides and opt for sustainable agriculture. The result is healthier food for one’s health and the health of one’s family.

A pleasant and relaxing pastime

Finally, gardening is both a playful and soothing activity. Spending time in contact with nature allows you to relax and relieve stress, while getting a breath of fresh air.

How exactly can you save money with gardening?

Now that you’re convinced of the benefits of gardening, it’s time to get down to serious business: how to set up an efficient and economical vegetable garden? Here are some tips to achieve it.

1. Plan your vegetable garden according to your needs and constraints

  • Determining the ideal size of your vegetable garden : before you start, you need to define the space you have available. You don’t need to own a huge garden to enjoy your own harvests; even a small balcony can be transformed into a hanging garden !
  • Calculate initial costs : there’s no need to spend a fortune to get started. By investing in a few basic tools (spade, rake, watering can) and recycled pots for seedlings, you can start with a modest budget. Moreover, some seeds can be recovered directly from our food to avoid buying packets.

2. Adopt good practices for economical gardening

  • Learning the appropriate gardening techniques: square foot gardening, composting, mulching… Gardening well requires some knowledge and practices that will save time and money while making your vegetable garden more productive.
  • Choose varieties that fit your needs : depending on the number of people to feed and the space available, some species will be more interesting to grow than others. For example, choosing leafy vegetables like spinach or salads will allow for multiple harvests from the same plot in a short amount of time.

3. Manage crops efficiently to avoid waste

To reap maximum benefits from your garden, it is crucial to manage your harvests well to avoid wasting and save even more money. Here’s how to proceed:

  1. Harvest at the right time: pick your fruits and vegetables when they are ripe to enjoy their optimal flavor and nutritional quality.
  2. Plan meals based on harvests: adjusting menus based on what is ready to be consumed in the garden avoids having to buy additional fresh produce and thus increasing food expenses.
  3. Preserving your produce for the long months: jams, canned goods, freezing… Thanks to these preservation methods, we can enjoy our harvests all year round and continue to save even when the season ends.

My Personal Experience

For my part, I started growing a vegetable garden a few years ago with the main goal of reducing my food expenses, while taking care of the environment and my health. Thanks to the techniques mentioned above, I was able to save almost 20% on my monthly food budget!

My favorite plants to grow are tomatoes, zucchinis, green beans, and strawberries: they are easy to cultivate, inexpensive, and grow quickly. Moreover, their abundant harvests allow me to share with my family and friends as well as to save a part for the less favorable months for gardening.

Anecdote: last year, by adding up the savings made thanks to my vegetable garden, I managed to save enough to afford a family trip to the South of France.

Growing your own vegetable garden is therefore a wise choice for those who wish to make substantial savings, not to mention the invaluable benefits for our health and that of our planet. Even without owning a large plot of land, it is always possible to embark on this rewarding and economical adventure!
