Winter can be a difficult period for indoor plants. Between the heating that dries out the air, the lack of natural light and the cold drafts, our green companions can suffer and show signs of distress. Fortunately, with a few simple first aid steps, it is possible to help them through this difficult time. Here is how to revitalize and restore the health of your indoor plants in winter.
Check the air humidity
In winter, heating makes the air in our houses and apartments particularly dry, which can dehydrate plants.
Solution: Use a humidifier to increase the ambient humidity, or place a container of water near your plants for natural evaporation. Moistened pebble trays under the pots are also effective in creating a humid microclimate around the plant.
Make sure they receive enough light
The lack of light is a common problem in winter. The days are shorter, and sunlight is often insufficient.

Solution: Move your plants closer to the windows to maximize their exposure to natural light. Consider cleaning the windows regularly to allow maximum light. If that’s not enough, consider using specific growth lamps to complement natural light.
Reduce watering
The classic mistake in winter is to continue watering plants at the same rate as during the warm months. With the slowdown of their growth, plants need less water.
Solution: Check the soil’s moisture before watering. The soil should be dry at least one to two centimeters deep for most plants. Allow the soil to dry between waterings to prevent root rot.
Be careful of cold drafts
Cold drafts coming from window or door openings can stress and damage your plants.
Solution: Move your plants away from sources of cold drafts. If you need to ventilate the room, make sure your plants are not in the direct path of the cold air.
Feed them moderately
Winter is generally not the ideal time to fertilize your plants, as their growth is slowed down.
Solution: If you see signs of nutritional deficiency, opt for a half-dose liquid fertilizer. Choose a light nutrient intake, just enough to support the plant without stimulating excessive growth.
Clean and inspect regularly
The dust accumulated on the leaves can block the light and reduce the plant’s ability to breathe.
Solution: Gently clean the leaves with a damp cloth or soft sponge. Take the opportunity to inspect your plants and quickly treat any signs of disease or insect infestation.
Taking care of your indoor plants in winter requires a bit of attention and preparation, but the rewards are great. By following these first aid tips, you will help your plants stay healthy and vigorous, ready to burst into life with the return of spring.
