More seductive than ever, the Citizen Tsuyosa shifts into (small) second gear.

Upon its release in 2022, the Citizen Tsuyosa quickly established itself as one of the most desirable watches, with its colorful look and unbeatable price (under 300 euros).

Declined in multiple versions since, with the disappearance of the magnifying glass and new dials, its success has never waned. However, there is no question of resting on one’s laurels: Citizen today unveils three new models equipped with a small second hand.

Review of the Phenomenal Success of Tsuyosa

In July 2022, Citizen unveils its new trendy and inexpensive automatic watch: the Tsuyosa. A new model meant to remind that the Japanese brand offers excellent value for money with its simple but stylish collections.

And since Tsuyosa means “strength” in Japanese, one can say that Citizen pulled off quite a feat with this collection. Quickly on social media, this newcomer seems unbeatable, notably the watch equipped with a yellow dial, which overshadows the three other variants (in blue, green, and black). The simplicity of its design, with its 40 mm case and steel bracelet, contrasts with this vibrant shade. During our test, a few months later, it is also some details that make this timepiece so attractive, whether it’s the crown positioned at 4 o’clock, the well integrated bracelet or the magnifier on the date window.

A real tidal wave, the Tsuyosa thus becomes the new “it watch”. In other words, THE watch to own to be fashionable. Citizen understands that it needs to take care of its golden goose and regularly offers new variations, including a very trendy Tiffany blue dial.

Awarded the Watch of the Year prize in 2023, the pretty Japanese watch is moving upmarket in 2024 with slightly more minimalist lines, but also new dials (pure white, smoked salmon and military pattern). This is confirmed today with the arrival of three new iterations, which take the Tsuyosa to a higher level.

A small second that changes everything?

Citizen claims an Art Deco inspiration for the new version of its star watch. What stands out most is the work done on its dial, once again. Farewell to pop colors, the brand favors refinement and a certain classicism here.

Blue, bronze and anthracite grey are on the menu, with a textured finish that adds additional character. But it’s mainly the arrival of a new complication that radically changes the face of the Tsuyosa: a small second, in motion in a silver counter at 6h, adorned with guilloche-stamped patterns.

To facilitate this integration, Citizen had to exchange the usual 8210 caliber for the 8322. Visible through the transparent case back and more beautifully decorated than its predecessor, it offers an accuracy of -20/+40 seconds and an increased power reserve of 60 hours.

To complete the whole and perfect this tribute to “the opulence and elegance of the 1920-1930 era”, the Tsuyosa is adorned with a slightly redesigned steel bracelet (with wider polished central links and a hidden butterfly clasp) but also for the first time with a black bovine leather strap, which brings a crazy class to the watch.

If these multiple changes result in an inevitable price increase, it is still quite acceptable. The Citizen Tsuyosa small second is indeed available from 359€ with the leather strap and 379€ in its 100% steel look, thus remaining an excellent alternative to the no less excellent Tissot PRX.
