The History of the Nixon Brand
Founded in 1998 by Andy Laats and Chad DiNenna in Encinitas, California, Nixon was born out of the desire to create quality watches for a specific audience: fans of board sports.
The brand quickly established itself as a staple in the world of surfing, skateboarding, and snowboarding, thanks to its ability to blend design, functionality, and a sense of community. Nixon’s success lies in a deep understanding of its target market, which has allowed it to develop products that resonate with the aspirations and lifestyle of its customers. In fact, after California, the company set foot in Europe in 2000, establishing itself in Soorts-Hossegor, another spot beloved by surfers.
After coming under the umbrella of Billabong in 2006, Nixon regained its independence just 3 years later. To continue its development, it then relied on a diversification strategy: the brand now sells a whole range of accessories, from bags to audio speakers, not forgetting hats…
Nevertheless, as it approaches its 30th year of existence, it is still and always the watches that contribute to Nixon’s success all around the world.
Our opinion on Nixon
If we were to position them against the competition, we could say that Nixon watches are cheaper than Timex and have better quality than Daniel Wellington.
His artistic collaborations, like his watches dedicated to Metallica, Tupac, and the Rolling Stones, have also allowed his fame to skyrocket in recent years. From the very stylish fashion watch to the more robust digital watch, the brand speaks to a variety of audiences, with models sold for less than 500 euros. And for such a price, Nixon’s proposal is quite fair.
The iconic watches of Nixon
Among Nixon’s flagship models, The Time Teller stands out for its simplicity and elegance. This watch, with its sleek design and varied color palette, adapts to all occasions, from everyday life to more formal events. It embodies the essence of Nixon’s philosophy: to offer quality, accessible, stylish, timeless watches… Finished in acetate or gold, with a green or turquoise blue dial, Miyota movement: The Time Teller is THE stylewatch par excellence, the most iconic model of Nixon, available for less than 150€.
In a less subtle and undoubtedly more divisive style, The 51-30 is the other best-seller of the brand. This chrono stands out with its bold design featuring an impressive 51 mm diameter case and a dial that’s sometimes bright in color. This model, often equipped with a chronograph (Miyota movement once again) and a rotating bezel, is perfect for adventure enthusiasts and athletes. Its water resistance (it’s waterproof to 30 ATM/300m) and toughness make it a preferred choice for surfers and divers.
Finally, among the other models in the collection, we could also mention the new Stinger, inspired by 1960s diving watches, or the Sentry, which offers a nice balance between sophistication and robustness, audacity and classicism.
