The Seiko Presage collection regularly showcases Japanese artistic craftsmanship. In all artistic fields. This time, the brand has chosen to highlight the animation films of Studio Ghibli, with a watch inspired by Nausicaä of the Valley of the Wind, the masterpiece of Hayao Miyazaki.
Seiko and Ghibli Studios, not a first
Seiko has always shown a deep desire to highlight Japanese art, integrating the essence of various national artistic expressions into its creations. By honoring Ghibli studios, the Japanese brand should delight animation fans in general and the genius Hayao Miyazaki in particular.
Collaborating with Ghibli studios is not a new thing for the brand, which had already unveiled in 2020, two watches dedicated to Porco Rosso. But with “Nausicaä of the Valley of the Wind”, Seiko is tackling an even more iconic film, released in 1984. This film immerses us in a post-apocalyptic future where harmony between nature and humanity is at the heart of Princess Nausicaä’s concerns. This work, rich in ecological and philosophical lessons, serves as a source of inspiration for this new Seiko watch.

A beautiful enamel dial
The centerpiece of the new Presage Craftsmanship watch is undoubtedly its enamel dial, a technical and artistic feat achieved by master craftsman Mitsuru Yokosawa and his team.
The blue color of the dial, carefully chosen to evoke Nausicaä’s outfit, was achieved after a rigorous manufacturing process aimed at capturing the perfect shade. This attention to detail continues with the general design of the watch, inspired by the tools and machines used by Nausicaä in the film. Thus, the crown is adorned with a blue cabochon symbolizing the eye of the Ohm, a central insect of the plot.
The transparent case back allows you to observe the caliber 6R51, a new version of Seiko’s 6R55 movement, with 72 hours of power reserve. But it also reveals an engraving inspired by the final scene of the film, further enriching the story that this watch seeks to tell.
This watch, limited to 1,500 pieces and available from March 2024, is not just a collector’s item for watch enthusiasts or animation film fans. It is a celebration of Japanese art, a bridge between Seiko’s watchmaking tradition and Ghibli’s animated cinema, delivered in a very beautiful case for a price of 1750 euros.
