Dive into Relaxation: The Unknown Benefits of Japanese Shiatsu Massage

The Japanese massage – Shiatsu for the purists – combines, in the quest for well-being, both a physical and spiritual approach, mirroring many Oriental medical practices.

What is Shiatsu?

Born in the north of China, the traditional massage (Amma) was imported to Japan, through Korea, in the sixth century. In the twentieth century, the Shiatsu technique takes over and then begins to conquer the West from the 1950s.

This massage does not focus on the symptoms of the ailment, but on the individual as a whole, it acts on the body and mind, inseparable in Asian medicine.

And yet, despite its spiritual dimension, “Shiatsu” literally means only “finger pressure”.

The technique of “finger pressure” finds its origins in the tradition of Chinese medicine, nourished by the theories of yin and yang.

It aims to restore the balance (Ki) of the body’s energies in males by applying pressure on specific areas or routes located along the “meridians” of the body, aiming to eliminate energy blockages.

What are the benefits of Japanese massage?

A relaxation technique, Shiatsu aims to stimulate the energy of vital organs to have a positive effect on health. It can be carried out, depending on the work to be done, lying on one’s stomach or back or even sitting on a chair specifically designed for massage.

A sign of the method’s success, Japanese massages are among the services that can be received at the office: a beautiful image of the meeting of the old and the modern as a stressed businessman gets a “Seated Shiatsu” at his desk.

There even exists a “No Stress Café”, where a practitioner will administer an express massage at your table.

These practices are however generally a summary of the actual treatment, subject to the approval of qualified specialists. In our country, practitioners of Japanese massage are referenced by the French Federation of Traditional Shiatsu. Whether at home or in specialized centers, Shiatsu must be certified as compliant.
